Melbourne book launch outcome

So I’m now back in Tokyo, after a two week sojourn in Melbourne – the more prominent Melbourne in Australia rather than its silly namesake in Florida, which is 32 years younger. I get parochial about this because the Melbourne in Australia is my hometown, and also the setting for my novel Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat – where, on 10 August, we finally did the book launch thing.

Floyd has his very own Facebook page

“Our P.I.’s name is Floyd and he’s an unhappy sort. He has a sick wife named Veronica who is hospitalised and may soon die. He has a job seeking out deviants, and for this he has ‘The Guide to Deviant Apprehension & Containment’, with its mantra of ‘Seek, Locate, Apprehend, Contain, Terminate [if necessary].’ Basically he’s a bounty hunter, and he’s none too happy about it, hence the copious amounts of alcohol that spill from Floyd’s pores and from these pages.”

Tokyo book launch – been there, done that!

Well, we actually did go through it with the Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat book launch on 25th March and I’m still recovering – as we went right through from 6:00pm to 6:30am.

It was bloody brilliant, too.

Aside from the novel launch per se, we quite conveniently skipped out on any of the usual aftershocks that’ve been plaguing Japan lately, no-one glowed in the dark, and we screened The Maltese Falcon and The Third Man interspersed with anime gems like Tokyo Marble Chocolate and Mamoru Oshii’s Tachiguish-Retsuden; heck, we even showed The Karate Kid.

Andrez is doing fine (in Tokyo)!

Just letting everyone know Andrez Bergen (Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat) and his family are doing fine.

From Andrez:
“It’s been an insane couple of days for sure, and we keep getting crazy after-shocks. But Tokyo was Read more…

thomas hardy, another sky press, and my debut novel

I first submitted to Another Sky Press on 17 November 2007, central China time.

On the 20th, I was asked to resubmit my synopsis and a longer excerpt. It was my thirtieth birthday. To me, this was significant.

All of us who write probably have some writer or writers we’ve somehow wanted to model ourselves after. Read more…

Radiohead mainstreams neo-patronage!

I’ve always wondered how long it would take before mainstream artists started jumping ship. We had Prince distribute his last album for free in a sunday newspaper (links to Wired) and now we’ve got Radiohead selling digital downloads for (drumroll please!) whatever price you want! Including free. (links to telegraph.co.uk) Read more…
