Interview with Andrez Bergen @ Tribute Books

“It could be one hundred percent bona fide reality, or one hundred percent surreal sham. But it is a contemporary homage to old skool detective noir, thrown into a blender with low-brow sci-fi of the near future and current social trends that are pervading the Western world – with the last city in the world being Melbourne, Australia. Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat review @ Verbicide

“And then the girl from the Activities was standing before me. You remember her, the one from my recurring dream. The one I murdered, even if I don’t exactly remember the details. She stood before me, a hole the size of a football cut into her stomach, her hands cradling her innards.”

Those are the kind of stark descriptions of the grotesque and fantastic that litter Andrez Bergen’s debut novel. Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat is a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi noir caper that comes on quick and relentless, and doesn’t quit until the last words. Read more…

Interview with Andrez by Jay Slayton-Joslin

“When I went to Detroit in 2004 to DJ, the people putting on the party took me for a spin through the inner city. That was a riveting eye-opener for me; there’s nothing like that in contemporary Australia or Japan. Although the recent earthquake and tsunami left a similar legacy, that was after I finished the novel. I remember Read more…

Melbourne book launch outcome

So I’m now back in Tokyo, after a two week sojourn in Melbourne – the more prominent Melbourne in Australia rather than its silly namesake in Florida, which is 32 years younger. I get parochial about this because the Melbourne in Australia is my hometown, and also the setting for my novel Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat – where, on 10 August, we Read more…

TSMG Book Launch 10-8-11 smaller

Melbourne/Australia launch party of TSMG, 10 August 2011

Care for a wayward synopsis?
In a tightly-wound nutshell, Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat is a sci-fi/noir/post-apocalyptic tome (with a sense of humour) – and it’s set in Melbourne, Australia, as the last city in the world. So we always had to do a book launch there.
The fact that it’s Andrez’s hometown is an added bonus.

Tokyo book launch – been there, done that!

Well, we actually did go through it with the Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat book launch on 25th March and I’m still recovering – as we went right through from 6:00pm to 6:30am.

It was bloody brilliant, too.

Aside from the novel launch per se, we quite conveniently skipped out on any of the usual aftershocks that’ve been plaguing Japan lately, no-one glowed in the dark, and we screened The Maltese Falcon and The Third Man interspersed with anime gems like Tokyo Marble Chocolate and Mamoru Oshii’s Tachiguish-Retsuden; heck, we even showed The Karate Kid.

Tokyo book launch of Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat: 25 March 2011

These are strange times here in Japan, for all too obvious reasons – think that insanely big earthquake and tsunami on March 11 – and sometimes it feels like we’re collectively treading water awaiting the next Big Thing to transpire. Meanwhile the nuclear reactors in Fukushima (230km north-east of Tokyo) still belch scary looking clouds and we get shaken by dozens of aftershocks everyday.

It’s been mad timing for my new novel to come out; teaches me to write a yarn that’s been described in terms of “post-apocalyptic” and “dystopian”; I think I’ll veer towards the “noir” side of things here – since I’m having the Tokyo book launch of Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat on Friday 25th March at the Pink Cow in Shibuya.
